The 5c’s of Effective Leadership

Leadership is an important trait at all levels but can be difficult to quantify. Not all bosses are leaders and not all leaders are bosses. However, it is true that some people are born leaders and others do not possess that natural talent. People can develop the habit of highly effective leaders with a proper understanding of the five c’s of effective leadership. With dedication and practice, anyone can learn what it takes to be a good leader.

Below are the five c’s of effective leadership:

1. Competence: The business world of today is a highly competitive one. In order for a leader to thrive and be successful in the present business environment, it is pivotal that they possess professional competence. This, however, doesn’t mean that the leader must know everything, what this means is that they understand what to do and how to get it done. Every leader who desires to attain a level of success has to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and in turn, they know exactly who they need on their team to help manage the areas they lack expertise.

2. Communication: One of the most essential facets of leadership, is sound communication. This trait sets a line between an effective leader and a tyrant. Your team can’t read your mind, hence you must learn to communicate what you have in your mind to accomplish. Also if your teams don’t seem to grasp your vision, the problem is from them but from you. To be successful as a leader and to improve your leadership, work on establishing healthy communication with your team. Let them have an understanding of your preferred mode of communication and together you all can build a stronger team.

3. Commitment: As a leader, for you to expect your team to work hard and deliver excellent results you must be willing to work hard yourself. Being a strong leader means leading by example, especially when it comes to committing to the end goal. Team members would feel motivated to work alongside a leader who spends hours working with them rather than one who does the bare minimum. To prove that you’re truly committed to the mission you should lead by example.

4. Courage (and Confidence): You must be willing to call the shots and make big decisions as a leader. These decisions may be made under pressure, with time restrictions and great consequences. You have to understand that whatever decision you make there would be criticized. However, a successful leader would possess the courage to see the decisions through because they believe in their capabilities and what they offer.

5. Capability: A successful leader with capability stretches the limits and inspires does around them to do so. This leader encourages creativity, is adept at change, and maintains a balance between stability and innovation.

He knows when to control and when to empower. Focusing equally on people, principles, and profits and never sacrifices one for the other. He holds himself and those around him responsible and accountable.
