Habits of Highly Creative People

What exactly is creativity? More often than not people assume that creativity is something we had as a child but we lost, or something allocated to rarified individuals that we can only admire from afar.

The honest truth is creativity is not a natural talent; it can be developed just like any other skill. You may have never felt creative, but you can become a highly creative person if cultivate certain habits that could help tap into your creative side. Below are five habits of highly creative people.

1.Take time to explore your imagination: “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we create the world.” —The Buddha

We amplify what we think about the most. The freedom of daydreaming can bring about new ideas and this may spring up creative thought processes. People often feel daydreaming can be unproductive but that is not often the case. Channel your thoughts to bring about new innovations and ideas, you may just find yourself thinking up your next great idea.

2. Creative people trust their intuition: Peter Brian Medawar once said: “The human mind treats a new idea the same way the body treats a strange protein; it rejects it.” Most of the time people hardly believe in ideas they are unacquainted to if you come up with an innovative idea which is unfamiliar to people it would almost most likely be turned down.

Most successful people got to where they are today because when they are told “ NO” they constantly say “YES”. Your creative ideas may differ from the conventional but that does not mean you are wrong. Carry out proper research and listen to advice but never sweep your idea under the rug.

3. Connect the dots: Steve Jobs spoke about this in his famous commencement speech he said: “Creative thinkers produce ideas by finding the relationship between facts. Facts merely on their own are useless until one sees the connection between them.”

Ideas are often produced when creative thinkers find relationships between facts. Whether there is a combination of ideas, materials, or knowledge, if you are able to create something which has not existed before, you are being creative. Ideas do not just connect on their own, you have to explore a little.

4. Always make the most out of challenges:  More often than not challenges and setbacks we face in our lives restrict us or puts an end to our creative energy. However, challenges are the best ways to test us and provide us with the best opportunity to come with creative solutions and achieve growth.

When next a challenge comes your way don’t back down or run from it, put your creativity to the test and come up with new and innovative ways to defeat it.

5. Be around people who are creative thinkers: If you are around people who are creative thinkers, you will be more creative yourself. Try to find groups or individuals you can do that with on a regular basis.
